Synthetic Grass
Synthetic Turf Installation Tips
1. Determine size and shape of turf area. Use chalk or a hose to help figure your final shape.
2. Excavate area to receive grass to a depth of 6 inches.
3. Install 3-4 inches of road base and compact with a plate compactor. Make sure to wet down the road base as you are compacting it to attain maximum compaction.
4. Around the perimeter of the turf install 2x4 “blend a board”. This is used to secure the edging of the turf.
5. Once the road base is in and the 2x4 is installed add 1-2” of decomposed granite so that it finishes level with the top of the 2x4. Compact the decomposed granite in the same manner as the road base. Add additional granite to ensure the granite is flush with the top of the 2x4.
6. Lay out your roll of turf so that it covers all of the 2x4. Ideally your turf will conform to the 15 ft wide rolls that synthetic turf normally comes in. If your turf area is wider than 15 ft you will need to seam the edges together with carpet seam tape. Cut your turf to match the 2x4 edging under the turf. Using a piece of PVC pipe helps to cut nice clean lines.
7. Once your turf has been cut and fitted over the 2x4 you attach the edges using ¾ - 1” staples about every 12 inches. This keeps the edges from rolling up. You want to try and pull the turf as tight as possible before stapling to ensure that it stays flat.
8. Your final step is to nail the turf down using 6” nails every 18 inches.
